Ex Death Row Guard Publicly Opposes Death Penalty
I remember this officer. It took a while but finally I was able to put a face to the name. In all the years I have been on death row this is the first office, or ex officer, to so openly speak out against capital punishment and portray us here as human beings like everyone else. Very good article. I am impressed.
I can recall a couple of times back around 93-94 when this officer leaned against the rail in front of my cell and debated the death penalty with me. She was arguing in favor of it then. That was before I became so burned out on everything.
Yes, I think this is a good article. It's been well received by everyone in here and lots of us old timers do remember her. I hope that she has the strength, balance, and perseverance to stick with this course she has plotted for herself. I also hope that this will encourage other officers and ex officers to speak up.
I had a minute or two to talk with a Sergeant here the other day. I was speaking of death row in general and how administration still has their foot on our necks and won't let up; and talking about the death penalty in general….and that was when he said he was against the death penalty. He seemed sincere but I ambivalent whether or not to truly believe him. What surprised me was him just admitting this to me. They are not suppose to. In fact this is the first time I know of that a ranking officer on the row has ever expressed his opposition to the death penalty. Anyway, read Lorie Hopper's article.
